Epic feats. Epic failures. An epic story.

Walter Isaacson charts Elon Musk’s journey from humble beginnings to one of the wealthiest people on the planet – but is Musk a genius or a jerk? From the author of Steve Jobs and other bestselling biographies, this is the astonishingly intimate story of Elon Musk, the most fascinating and controversial innovator of our era – a rule-breaking visionary who helped to lead the world into the era of electric vehicles, private space exploration and artificial intelligence. Oh, and took over Twitter.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue and charismatic fantasist. His father’s impact on his psyche would linger. He developed into a tough yet vulnerable man-child with an exceedingly high tolerance for risk, a craving for drama, an epic sense of mission, and a maniacal intensity that was callous and at times destructive.

At the beginning of 2022 – after a year marked by SpaceX launching thirty-one rockets into orbit, Tesla selling a million cars, and him becoming the richest man on earth – Musk spoke ruefully about his compulsion to stir up dramas. ‘I need to shift my mindset away from being in crisis mode, which it has been for about fourteen years now, or arguably most of my life,’ he said. It was a wistful comment, not a New Year’s resolution. Even as he said it, he was secretly buying up shares of Twitter, the world’s ultimate playground. Over the years, whenever he was in a dark place, his mind went back to be...

BOOK OF THE DAY

"Why Motivating People Doesn't Work ... and What Does" throws out the outdated toolbox of carrots and sticks.

Susan Fowler argues that true motivation is intrinsic, sparked by autonomy, purpose, and growth. Leaders should ditch controlling behaviors and instead foster supportive environments where individuals can thrive. Building strong relationships, celebrating progress, and leading by example are key to unlocking the full potential of teams and organizations.

This book is a call for a paradigm shift in leadership, moving from extrinsic manipulation to nurturing intrinsic passion and driving lasting success.

BOOK OF THE DAY

*Amazon Book overview*

Almost all of these essays on Savitri were first published as monthly instalments in the e-journal Next Future. Dr Nadkarni s approach has been to acclimatise the reader to the experience of reading Savitri by introducing, canto by canto through each book, selected passages that mark important milestones in the poem. His presentation combines an appreciation of the beauty and mantric power of Sri Aurobindo s poetry, a discourse that highlights the departures made by Sri Aurobindo from the tale recounted by Vyasa in the Mahabharata in order to emphasise the story s deeper symbolic meaning, and an exploration of some of the themes running through the poem that are central to Sri Aurobindo s vision and teachings. The last two essays are transcripts of talks that summarise Books XI and XII and give a succinct overview of the entire poem.

BOOK OF THE DAY

Amazon Book Overview
The Singapore Story is the first volume of the memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew, the man who planted the island state of Singapore firmly on the map of the world. It was first published in 1999.

In intimate detail, Lee recounts the battles against colonialists, communists and communalists that led to Singapore’s independence. With consummate political skill, he countered adversaries, sometimes enlisting their help, at others opposing them, in the single-minded pursuit of Singapore’s interests. We read how he led striking unionists against the colonial government, how over tea and golf he fostered ties with key players in Britain and Malaya, of secret midnight meetings in badly lit rooms, drinking warm Anchor beer with a communist underground leader, of his purposeful forging of an alliance with communists to gain the support of the Chinese-educated masses. Readers will find inspiration in his tenacity as he fought for the people’s hearts and minds against first the communists and later the communalists – in parliament, on the streets and through the media.

Drawing on unpublished Cabinet papers, archives in Singapore, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, as well as personal correspondence, he gives us a vivid picture of how others viewed him: determined (“Lee will bluff, bully and blackmail up to the eleventh hour”), motivated (“Choo knew I sweated blood to master Hokkien”), ambitious (“He would think himself as legitimate as I was to be the leader of Malaya”), dangerous (“Crush Lee! Put him inside”). It is a sometimes controversial yet strangely consistent portrait of this Asian statesman.

These experiences and his dealings with the political leaders were to shape his views and policies, which have had a major impact on Singapore and the region.

    BOOK OF THE DAY

    *Amazon overview*

'A single bullet took one life and shattered three others. Mine, among them. My brother shot my father. My mother heard the shot. Approximately 1400 kilometers away, in the Armed Forces Medical College at Pune, where I was pursuing a postgraduate course in pathology while serving as assistant warden of the hostel, the telephone rang. It was the night of December 4, 1977, a night that changed me forever.'This book presents Dr Arvind Lal's journey as a spiritual seeker and an accidental entrepreneur. How did a saint from a remote Himalayan village called Hairakhan transform Arvind's life? How did Lal pathlabs become a household brand in India? How does spiritualism shape his thoughts as an entrepreneur? Can work and spirituality gel in a 'karma yoga' form as mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures? Woven around Arvind's life, this book answers these and many other questions about work, life and spirituality.

    BOOK OF THE DAY

Prophet Song is a 2023 dystopian novel by Irish author Paul Lynch, published by Oneworld. The novel depicts the struggles of the Stack family, including Eilish Stack, a mother of four who is trying to save her family as the Republic of Ireland slips into totalitarianism. The narrative is told in an unconventional manner, in which there are no paragraph breaks.

    *Background*

Lynch stated that one of the main inspirations for the book was the Syrian Civil War, the ensuing refugee crisis, and the West's indifference to the plight of refugees. Lynch has also cited the German author Hermann Hesse's work as an inspiration to write his first dystopian novel.

    *Synopsis*

In a near-future Republic of Ireland, in the wake of a teacher's union strike, the right-wing National Alliance party seizes control of the government. The National Alliance gives the Irish national police (the Garda Síochána) and the judiciary far-reaching powers. The regime also establishes a new secret police force, the Garda National Services Bureau. The new government quickly repeals civil liberties; peaceful protests are broken up, and Irish citizens are arrested without cause and tortured.

Larry Stack, a teacher and trade union leader, is arrested and held without charge while attending a rally. His wife Eilish, who is a scientist, is left to care for their four children and her father who has dementia. Eilish petitions for her husband's release. The state soon descends into civil war, and Irish citizens who are suspected of being part of the resistance are arrested or killed. Eilish struggles to keep her family together during the civil war; she contemplates fleeing the country with her family, possibly joining her sister Áine in Canada.

    BOOK OF THE DAY

    *Amazon Book overview*
Thomas Mann's first great novel, written at the age of 25, is an epic study of decadence among the merchant families of Hamburg at the end of the nineteenth century. The novel is based on Mann's own experience as the son of a German merchant prince, but it goes far beyond his own experience in its sweep and comprehensiveness.
