How to Love Reading
from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Many people do not read for pleasure. However, reading can greatly enhance your life, and there are ways to make it even more enjoyable.
Steps
- Identify what kind of reading you want to enjoy. Believe it or not, people enjoy different kinds of reading. Some people do research, some people read to learn how to do things, and some people read in order to enjoy stories or poetry. Before anything else, figure out why you want to read.
- Once you have your motive in mind, realise that there are countless types of reading materials. For example, if you want to read stories, keep in mind that there are many genres, like fantasy, sci-fi, romantic novels, creative nonfiction, etc. Don't decide you don't like reading just because you don't like one particular kind of book.
- After you know what kind of reading appeals to you, try a variety of books and series in that category. Even within the same genre, there are a wide variety of books. For example, no one could say that the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats are the same, even though they are both poetry.
- After some trial and error, you will eventually find some favourite things to read and will slowly develop a love of reading.
- Go to your local library. Your tax dollars pay for the service and you can try out as many books as you would like for free (as long as you remember to return or renew them on time).
- Create a good reading environment. Find a place that is quiet, well-lit, and comfortable. You can even make a reading nook in your room.
- Try listening to music. For some people, this makes reading more pleasurable. Soft music (both in volume and type) is generally received better, but any type will do. It depends on what you like.
Tips
- Once you find your favourite things to read, be sure to occasionally branch out. You never know when you might find a new favourite.
- Many people decide they don't like reading because they found the books they had to read in school to be boring. Keep in mind that schools often want to regulate what students read, and the books they require by no means represent every kind of reading material available.
- Remember to not limit yourself to just books. Keep in mind that there are countless magazines, newspapers, websites, etc. that you may love to read.
- Try reading plays. This brings Shakespeare to many people's minds, but really you can read any play. It is quite a different reading experience and is enjoyable to many people.
- For some people, reading a bit about the author's background helps. If you like books from a particular author, try to get some background information about the author. It will help you to make your reading more enjoyable and fun. It will also help you to have more information about the author, the way the books are brought into being and other different things.
Warnings
- If you are reading for anything more than pleasure (like if you are researching or learning how to do something) keep in mind that many sources are not reliable; even school textbooks are widely considered to be biased.
